The NUMBALUMS are one of the most active affiliate groups within the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA). Group events provide opportunities to socialize with fellow alumni as well as opportunities for intellectual and musical enrichment. The NUMBALUMS also provide support for the Northwestern Bands program.

Beyond homecoming, here are just a few of the events that NUMBALUMS enjoy together throughout the year:

Football Tailgates

Band alumni gather for informal tailgates before every home game and several away games throughout the season. To attend, simply show up four hours before kickoff and look for the purple NUMBALUMS flag! We’re located in the West Lot at home games. If you’re attending an away game and would like to know if NUMBALUMS will be there, or to attend the official Homecoming tailgate open to NUMBALUMS, family, and friends in the West Lot, e-mail our Vice President-Programming for more information.

Post-season Festivities

No one enjoys a bowl game more than a Wildcat fan—and there’s no bigger Wildcat fan than a NUMBALUM! In the event of a bowl game, you can bet the NUMBALUMS will be there to see NUMB’s performances, socialize at NAA events, and lose our voices as we cheer on the Cardiac ’Cats.

NUBB Pep Band

NUMBALUMS join the Northwestern University Basketball Band (NUBB) in the stands for one home basketball game every year. This year’s event was on February 8, 2014.

Waa-Mu Dress Rehearsal

At our annual May reception for the Waa-Mu Show, Northwestern’s renowned student musical, NUMBALUMS enjoy wine, hors d'oeuvres, and a special talk from the musical’s director. Following the reception, NUMBALUMS are treated to an exclusive viewing of the show’s final dress rehearsal at Cahn Auditorium.

Additional Programs

The NUMBALUMS also support the Northwestern Band programs and students. Our initiatives include, but are not limited to:

Student Recognition

The NUMBALUMS sponsor the Carl Dill Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding graduating senior member of NUMB. We also provide financial support for the annual Band Banquet, where the Carl Dill Award is presented and all graduating seniors are welcomed into the NUMBALUMS organization. The NUMBALUMS also host an annual picnic for NUMB at the conclusion of band camp.

Capital Investments

In recent years, the NUMBALUMS have supported the Northwestern Bands program with several capital purchases to improve the student experience. These include a sound system for NUMB rehearsals and performances, design and maintenance of the NUMB website, new framed photographs to decorate the hallways of Regenstein Hall, and rugby jerseys for use as NUBB uniforms.

Recordings

The NUMBALUMS have produced three CDs of music performed by Northwestern Bands:

  • Contemporaries, a CD of music performed by the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mallory Thompson, Director of Bands. Available on iTunes or Amazon.com.
  • Hail to Purple, a retrospective CD of NUMB recordings made between 1954 and 2000.
  • Push On!, recorded in 2005 and featuring 20 tracks, including “Go U Northwestern,” the alma mater, “Push On,” “Hey Baby,” and selections from the band’s halftime performances.

The CDs are also available at the Norris Center Bookstore or by calling the band office at (847) 491-3412.

And the list goes on…

The NUMBALUMS provide opportunities for musical enrichment, including online concert streams and live concert events. We also work closely with the Northwestern University Archives to catalog the rich history of NUMB and Northwestern Bands.

The NAA Leadership Conference recognized the NUMBALUMS with awards for Excellence in Governance in 2013 and Excellence in Student Initiatives in 2010. The NUMBALUMS received the honors (and even trophies!) for the work of our board to develop the club's leadership and organizational codes and our tireless work to support the Northwestern University Marching Band and its students. Our activities list is more than what we do; it's how we express our support of a program that made a difference in each of our lives, and we are honored to provide that assistance and look forward to finding more ways to serve both students and alumni in 2014 and beyond.
