Northwestern Women's LacrosseMarch 3, 2012 — EVANSTON, ILL. — Horns are flashing and drums are beating at Lakeside Field in Evanston, where the Northwestern University "Wildcat" Marching Band often rehearses on the artificial turf. But this is no rehearsal, it's a celebration of the Northwestern women's lacrosse team at their home season opener match.

It should "be a bit of a surprise to the team," said director of athletic bands Daniel J. Farris.

Fans have been encouraged to get to their seats early to help celebrate Northwestern's 2011 NCAA championship victory, the program's sixth in the last seven years. The ceremony will include ring distribution, banner unveilings, and "a special musical performance," according to athletic department officials.

Following the ceremonies—and three impressive wins against top-10 opponents already this season—the undefeated and top-ranked Wildcats will make their 2012 home debut against the Oregon Ducks, who fell to Northwestern with 21-2 on the scoreboard in their previous and only meeting in 2005. The Wildcats are 9-1 all-time in home openers under coach Kelly Amonte Hiller and have amassed a 71-1 record at Lakeside Field since 2005. Full details about today's match and the team are available at

Weather permitting, a live video stream of Saturday's home-opener at Lakeside Field will be available on Wildcats All-Access with a radio broadcast airing online from WNUR Sports. Fans can also follow the game live on Gametracker or at @NU_SportsLIVE on Twitter. The team can also be found on Twitter as @NUlax.

Fans will have lots of opportunities to cheer for the Wildcat women's lacrosse team this season. They are set to play 10 regular-season home games this spring, the most since 2007. Season tickets are still available while single-game tickets may be purchased at the gate for $7 (adults), $4 (18 and under) and $3 for groups of 15 or more. Parking at Lakeside Field is free for all Northwestern women's lacrosse home games.
